There are a lot of modems available in the market today and looking for a compatible Charter cable modem for your home can seem like a difficult task. I’m here to help you figure out what modem’s best for your Charter internet connection.

What Is Charter?

Charter is a telecommunications company that provides cable TV, internet and phone services to over 5 million households nationwide. This communications giant is the 4th largest Cable TV provider in the entire country. Charter Communications offers bundle packages which allow you to avail of two or three of their services collectively for a lower price.

Charter’s bundle plans offer internet speeds of up to 30 Mbps. But if you want a download speed of up to 100Mbps and an upload speed of up to 5 Mbps, then perhaps the Ultra 100 Internet Plan is for you. This plan is exclusive for internet only and does not include cable TV or telephone connections.

Selecting A Cable Modem

Cable internet is actually one of the fastest growing means of applying for the internet. It’s easy to install because majority of home owners already have cable TV installed. Often, when you apply for cable internet, the internet service provider will lease you a cable modem which you have to pay for every month. This added cost can be a strain to your wallet. But it can be avoided if you buy your own Charter compatible modem.

It’s really not that hard selecting the best cable modem for Charter. In fact, they’ve made it easier by providing a list of Charter compatible modems on their website. First on their list is the Motorola SB6121. This model is capable of downloading speeds of up to 160Mbps. Next on the list is the Motorola Surfboard SB6120 which allows for the bonding of 4 downstream and upstream channels. This gives the model a speed of about 100Mbps.

Third in the list is the UBEE U10C035. This model also allows for the bonding of 4 channels, but has a total downstream speed of up to 160Mbps. The 4th and 5th modems on the list are both from Cisco, namely the DPC3008 and the DPC3010 respectively. The former allows for a download speed of up to 340Mbps and an upload speed of up to 120Mbps. On the other hand, the Cisco DPC3010 gives a download speed of up to 320Mbps and the same upload speed as the DPC3008.

The five mentioned modems above all use a DOCSIS 3.0 system but you can check out the site for compatibility with modems running DOCSIS 2.0 versions or lower. Because all of these modems are mentioned on the compatible list for Charter, you can choose any one of them. It really boils down to your personal preference and your budget.

Choosing A Combo

If you only have one gadget at home, such as a Desktop PC, then a modem will suffice. However, if you have multiple devices with wireless internet capabilities, then perhaps a Charter wireless cable modem combo is for you.

Just like with the DOCSIS 3.0 and DOCSIS 2.0 modems, Charter also provides a list of wireless routers that are compatible with their listed modems. Some of these are the Cisco DDW3612 and the UBEE DDW3612. Their functions and specifications, along with that of other models, are available on the Charter website.

Making The Purchase

13304If you’ve set your heart on buying your own cable modem for Charter or a wireless router combo, it’s important to read and get more information about the model you’re buying first. Keep in mind that even though one model gets high ratings and good reviews, it doesn’t always mean that the model will work for you. Sometimes experience is the best way to determine your ideal product. Try borrowing different modems and wireless routers from your family and friends and see which ones work best with your connection.

Also, don’t be too name-dependent. A Linksys DOCSIS 3.0 may be just as good as a Motorola DOCSIS 3.0, or better. It really depends on your hardware, location and the conditions which you bought your modem or router. But if you really want to be sure with your purchase, I suggest you buck up and consult your most trusted Charter cable guy.
